This position is under minimal supervision, performs, skilled work in the operation, maintenance, and repair of the Company’s water distribution and treatment systems. This is the senior-level position in the Operation series and requires a high degree of technical knowledge, field experience, and certification.

The following is a list of major duties and responsibilities for this position along with certain supportive duties. It is not all-inclusive. Other duties and responsibilities may be added as needed and in addition, management, as appropriate, may modify this job description.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Leads and performs the installation, maintenance, and repair of water distribution lines, valves, hydrants, meters, and related infrastructure.
  2. Oversee water treatment processes and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal water quality regulations.
  3. Conducts advanced troubleshooting and diagnostics on water system issues and coordinates appropriate corrective actions.
  4. Schedules and performs advance system flushing, valve turning, pressure testing, and hydrant maintenance.
  5. Collects water samples for laboratory analysis and interprets test results to identify potential system issues.
  6. Assists with the development and implementation of standard operating procedures and safety protocols.
  7. Provides training, guidance, and field leadership to Operators Levels I and II.
  8. Prepares and maintains accurate records, logs, and reports related to water usage, maintenance, and regulatory compliance.
  9. Interfaces with the public, contractors, and other agencies regarding water service availability, shutdowns, and repairs.
  10. Responds to emergency water system calls, including main breaks, leaks, and service interruptions, during and after regular hours.  Qualifies for Standby duty.
  11. Ensures all work is performed in accordance with Cal-OSHA safety standards and organizational policies.

Qualifications:

  1. Three (3) years of experience and equivalent to that gained as an Operator I or II.
  2. Possession of T2 and D3 certifications at time of promotion or hire. Must maintain these certifications as a condition of employment.
  3. Advanced knowledge of traffic control procedures and traffic sign regulations.
  4. Advanced knowledge of the 811 process and procedures.
  5. Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and those contacted in the course of the work.
  6. Must have High School diploma or equivalent of 12th grade education
  7. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class C California driver’s license before hiring.
  8. Must be insurable to operate a company vehicle before hire.

Physical Requirements

The position requires mobility to work in the field, including strength, stamina, and flexibility to perform medium to heavy physical labor in confined spaces, around machinery, and on ladders. Responsibilities include operating various hand and power tools, construction equipment, and accessing, entering, and retrieving data via computer or calculator. Fieldwork involves frequent walking in operational areas to identify hazards, as well as bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, and climbing for inspections and tasks. Employees must be capable of lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling materials up to 75 pounds, with proper equipment for heavier loads. Additionally, the role requires intermittent sitting while operating equipment, standing and walking during maintenance activities, and executing fine motor tasks such as grasping, pushing, pulling, and manipulating tools. Climbing onto heavy equipment for testing or inspection is necessary, with the ability to lift or carry up to 50 pounds as part of routine duties. Vision, hearing, and speech capabilities are essential for reading materials, working with computer screens, and communicating in person or via telephone or radio.

Compensation/Benefits:

$30 – $34 per hour plus $2 per hour for each additional certification

Health insurance paid by company for employee includes dental, vision, life insurance; 401K Plan; Accrue 80 hours of PTO year 1 and 120 year 2; 8 paid holidays.
