Responsible for performing a full range of water utility duties including operation and maintenance of wells, booster pumps, tanks, pressure reducing valves, distribution mains, service connections, meters and SCADA. Position will initiate and terminate water services, conduct meter readings. Duties include:
- Perform preventative maintenance on equipment, machinery and SCADA control systems related to wells, transmission/distribution mains, pumping stations, pressure reducing valves and storage facilities.
- Repair and maintain structures for wells and booster stations; take meter readings and perform well soundings and hydrant tests to determine operations to meet fire flows.
- Take water samples and assist water quality staff as necessary.
- Respond to customers’ inquiries and answer questions from the public concerning water quality.
- Perform routine maintenance work in the care of tools and supplies.
- Monitor water supply and pressure with telemetry equipment; adjust pumps and valves to maintain proper zone pressure.
- Use heavy equipment such as backhoes and valve exercising tools in support of distribution system maintenance and repair.
- Inspects water services lines and meters for compliance with established codes and/or damaged or worn parts and makes repairs as necessary; perform preventative maintenance adjustments.
Requirements;
- Two (2) years of experience equivalent to that gained as an Operator 1.
- Possession of Y1 and D2 certifications at time of hire. Must maintain these certifications as a condition of employment.
- Must possess or obtain certifications within (1) year in this classification in the safe operation of heavy equipment such as a backhoe in accordance with Cal/OSHA standards and departmental policies.
- Knowledgeable to applicable Federal, State and local codes and regulations associated with water works such as Title 22 and Title 17.
- Basic traffic control procedures and traffic sign regulations.
- Working knowledge of basic computer software programs related to work.
- Must have high school diploma or equivalent of 12th grade education.
- Possess or ability to possess a valid Class C California driver’s license before hiring (this position requires driving to job sites) and must be insurable to operate a company vehicle prior to hire.
Physical Requirements:
The position requires mobility to work in the field, including strength, stamina, and flexibility to perform medium to heavy physical labor in confined spaces, around machinery, and on ladders. Responsibilities include operating various hand and power tools, construction equipment, and accessing, entering, and retrieving data via computer or calculator. Fieldwork involves frequent walking in operational areas to identify hazards, as well as bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, and climbing for inspections and tasks. Employees must be capable of lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling materials up to 75 pounds, with proper equipment for heavier loads. Additionally, the role requires intermittent sitting while operating equipment, standing and walking during maintenance activities, and executing fine motor tasks such as grasping, pushing, pulling, and manipulating tools. Climbing onto heavy equipment for testing or inspection is necessary, with the ability to lift or carry up to 50 pounds as part of routine duties. Vision, hearing, and speech capabilities are essential for reading materials, working with computer screens, and communicating in person or via telephone or radio.
Wages: With the T1 and D2 certifications, this position will pay $28 per hour. Each additional certification results in a $2 per hour increase in pay.
